Bangali educationist, satirist, romantic writer, linguist, and great storyteller.

Syed Muztaba Ali was born on 13 September 1904 at his father's workplace in Karimganj, sylhet . His father, Syed Sikandar Ali, was a Sub-Registrar. He was admitted to Santiniketan where he obtained his BA degree in 1926. .He was the first graduate of the university. Later, he went to Kabul and worked in the education department (1927-1929). Then he sought and obtained a German government scholarship to study in Berlin and Bonn Universities towards Ph D. In 1934-1935 he studied at the Al-Azhar University in Cairo . Subsequently, he taught at colleges in Baroda (1936-1944) and Bogra (1949). He learned several languages at Visva-Bharati: Sanskrit, English, French, German, Persian, Arabic, Italian, Hindi, and Gujrati. He had learned Urdu at home. Apart from languages, he also studied Sangkhya and Vedanta at Visva-Bharati. He was Secretary of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and also worked for some time on All India Radio. He returned to teaching in 1961, joining the Islamic Studies Department of Visva-Bharati as Reader. He retired in 1965. Syed Mujtaba Ali was a pioneer language activist. He expressed his affection and logic to call for Bangla as our state language in an essay named Purba-Pakistaner Rastrabhasa . Deshae Bidashae, Abishvasya , Jale-Danay , Mayurkanthi , Cha Cha kahini, Bhabo Ghurae o Annano, shabnam,Tuni Mem,Panchatantra,Shahar-Iyar are his well known work. After the liberation of Bangladesh , Syed Mujtaba Ali returned to his native land in 1972. He died on 11 February 1974.
