Kazi Nazrul Islam was a patriot, poet, composer, writer, political figure. He was born on the 25th May 1898 at Churulia in the district of Burdwan, West Bengal, India. The second of three sons and one daughter, Nazrul lost his father Kazi Fakir Ahmed in 1980 when he was only nine year old. Nazrul's nickname was "Dukhu" (sorrow) Mia, a name that aptly reflects the hardships and misery of his early years. In 1917 he joined the Indian Army. For almost three years, up to March-April 1920, Nazrul served in the army and was promoted to the rank of Battalion Quarter Master Havildar. Later he assailed the British Raj in India and preached revolution through his poetic works, such as "Bidrohi" ("The Rebel") and "Bhangar Gaan" ("The Song of Destruction"), as well as his publication "Dhumketu" ("The Comet"). Nazrul was an emotional soul, but his emotion was unstable and volatile. Those who came in personal contact with him were moved by his irresistible enthusiasm and sincerity. But his literary output falls far short of his merit, except the early poems in Agnibina . After Agnibina his best known books of poems and songs are Dolonchampa(1923), Biser Bansi (The poisonous flute, 1924), Bhangar Gan (Songs of break-up, 1924), Puber Haoya (The east wind 1925) and Bulbul (1928). In 1942 he was admitted to a mental asylum. On June 30 , 1962 his wife Pramila died and Nazrul remained in intensive medical care. In 1972, the newly independent nation of Bangladesh obtained permission from the Government of India to bring Nazrul to live in Dhaka and accorded him honorary citizenship. The rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was crowned in 1972 as the national poet of Bangladesh. The poet died at Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh . Bangla Academy has published collected works of the poet to celebrate the poets birth centenary in the year(1999).
১৮৯৯ সালের ২৪ মে (১৩০৬ বঙ্গাব্দের ১১ই জ্যৈষ্ঠ) ভারতের পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বর্ধমান জেলার আসানসোল মহকুমার চুরুলিয়া গ্রামে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন কাজী নজরুল ইসলাম। কাজী ফকির আহমদের দ্বিতীয়া পত্নী জাহেদা খাতুনের ষষ্ঠ সন্তান তিনি। তার বাবা ছিলেন স্থানীয় এক মসজিদের ইমাম। তারা ছিলেন তিন ভাই এবং বোন। কাজী নজরুল ইসলামের ছোট কালে ডাক নাম ছিল দুখু মিয়া। ১৯০৮ সালে যখন তার বাবা মারা যান তখন তার বয়স মাত্র নয় বছর। পারিবারিক অভাব অনটনের কারণে তাঁর শিক্ষা বাধাগ্রস্থ হয় এবং মাত্র দশ বছর বয়সে তাকে রোজগারের পথে নামতে হয়। বাল্য বয়সেই লোকশিল্পের প্রতি আকৃষ্ট হয়ে একটি লেটো দলে যোগ দেন। এর পর একজন খ্রিস্টান রেলওয়ে গার্ডের খানসামা এবং সবশেষে আসানসোলের চা-রুটির দোকানে রুটি বানানোর কাজ নেন। এভাবে বেশ কষ্টের মাঝেই তার বাল্য জীবন অতিবাহিত হতে থাকে। ১৯১৭ সালের শেষদিকে মাধ্যমিকের প্রিটেস্ট পরীক্ষার না দিয়ে তিনি সেনাবাহিনীতে সৈনিক হিসেবে যোগ দেন। ১৯৪২ সালে তিনি অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়েস। এতে তিনি বাকশক্তি হারিয়ে ফেলেন। এরপর ১৯৫৩ সালের মে মাসে নজরুল ও তার স্ত্রী প্রমীলা দেবীকে চিকিৎসার জন্য লন্ডন পাঠানো হয়। কিন্তু চিকিৎসকরা বলেন কবিকে আরোগ্য করে তোলা অসম্ভব। ১৯৫৩ সালের ১৪ ডিসেম্বর রোম থেকে দেশের উদ্দেশ্যে যাত্রা করেন। ১৯৭১ সালে বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধে বাঙালিদের বিজয় লাভের মাধ্যমে বাংলাদেশ নামে একটি স্বাধীন রাষ্ট্র প্রতিষ্ঠা লাভ করে। ১৯৭২ সালের ২৪ মে তারিখে ভারত সরকারের অনুমতিক্রমে কবি নজরুলকে সপরিবারে বাংলাদেশে নিয়ে আসা হয়। বাংলাদেশের তৎকালীন রাষ্ট্রপতি শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান এক্ষেত্রে বিশেষ উদ্যোগ নিয়েছিলেন। কবির বাকি জীবন বাংলাদেশেই কাটে। বাংলা সাহিত্য এবং সংস্কৃতিতে তার বিশেষ অবদানের স্বীকৃতিস্বরুপ ১৯৭৪ সালের ৯ ডিসেম্বর তারিখে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় তাকে সম্মানসূচক ডি.লিট উপাধিতে ভূষিত করে। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের এক সমাবর্তনে তাকে এই উপাধি প্রদান করা হয়। ১৯৭৬ সালের জানুয়ারি মাসে বাংলাদেশ সরকার কবিকে বাংলাদেশের নাগরিকত্ব প্রদান করে। একই বছরের ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারিতে তাকে একুশে পদকে ভূষিত করা হয়। একুশে পদক বাংলাদেশের সবচেয়ে সম্মানসূচক পদক হিসেবে বিবেচিত হয়ে থাকে। ১৯৭৬ সালে নজরুলের স্বাস্থ্যেরও অবনতি হতে শুরু করে। জীবনের শেষ দিনগুলো কাটে ঢাকার পিজি হাসপাতালে। ১৯৭৬ সালের ২৯ আগস্ট তারিখে তিনি মৃত্যুবরণ করেন।
