Jasimuddin
A renowned Bengali poet, songwriter, prose writer, folklore collector and radio personality.
Jasimuddin was born in the village of Faridpur District named Tambulkhana on 1 January 1903 in the house of his maternal uncle. His full name was Jasimuddin Mollah. His father was Ansaruddin Mollah, who was a school-teacher. Jasimuddin studied at Faridpur Welfare School, Faridpur Zilla School, Rajendra College . He got his BA and MA degree in Bangla from the University of Calcutta in 1929 and 1931 respectively. He joined the University of Dhaka in 1938 as a Lecturer of Bangla. He left the university in 1944 and joined the Department of Information and Broadcasting. He worked there until his retirement as Deputy Director in 1962. Jasimuddin started writing poems at an early age. As a college student, he wrote the celebrated poem 'Kabar' (grave), a very simple tone to obtain family-religion and tragedy. The poem was placed in the entrance Bangla textbook while he was still a student of Calcutta University. His Nokshi Kanthar Maath (Field of the Embroidered Quilt) is considered as a masterpiece of Bangla literature and has been translated into many different languages. Rakhali , Sojan Badiyar Ghat Rangila Nayer Majhi , Matir Kanna , Padma Nadir Deshe , Beder Meye are his well known work. His verse has a simple, charming bucolic authenticity that earned him the title ‘Polli Kobi’. In 1969 Jasimuddin was awarded the D Litt by Rabindra Bharati University. He also won several awards, including the President's Award for Pride of Performance (1958), Ekushey Padak (1976) and Swadhinata Dibas Puruskar (posthumous, 1978). He was also selected for the Bangla Academy Award in 1974 but he refused it. Polli Kobi Jasimuddin died in Dhaka on 13 March 1976 and was buried near his ancestral home at Gobindapur, Faridpur.
জসীমউদ্দীন ১৯০৩ সনের পহেলা জানুয়ারি ফরিদপুর জেলার় তাম্বুলখানা গ্রামে তার নানার বাড়িতে জন্মগ্রহন করেন। তার বাবা আনসার উদ্দিন মোল্লা, পেশায় একজন স্কুল শিক্ষক ছিলেন। তার মায়ের নাম আমিনা খাতুন ওরফে রাঙাছুট। জসীমউদ্দীনের পুরো নাম জসীমউদ্দীন মোল্লা। যদিও পরে তিনি জসীমউদ্দীন নামেই পরিচিত হন। তিনি ফরিদপুর ওয়েলফেয়ার স্কুল, ও পরবর্তীতে ফরিদপুর জেলা স্কুল থেকে পড়ালেখা করেন। ১৯২১ সনে এখান থেকে তিনি প্রবেশিকা পরীক্ষা পাস করেন। তিনি কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে বাংলায় বি. এ. এবং এম. এ. ডিগ্রী অর্জন করেন। ১৯৩৮ সনে তিনি ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে বাংলা বিভাগের প্রভাষক হিসেবে যোগ দেন। ১৯৪৪ সালে তিনি ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের চাকুরী বাদ দিয়ে রেডিও তে যোগদান করেন।জসীমউদ্দীন ছোট কাল থেকেই লেখালেখি করতেন। তিনি কলেজে পরা অবস্থায় কবর কবিতাটি লেখেন যা তাকে পাঠকদের মাঝে পরিচিত করে তোলে। তিনি যখন কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে পড়ছেন তখন কবর কবিতাটিকে প্রবেশিকা পরীক্ষার সিলেবাসের অন্তর্ভুক্ত করা হয়। তার লেখা “নকশী কাথার মাঠ” বাংলা সাহিত্যের অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ রচনা। রাখালী, বালু চর, ধানখেত, সোজন বাদিয়ার ঘাট, হাসু ,রঙিলা নায়ের মাঝি তার জনপ্রিয় রচনা।বাংলাদেশের পল্লী এলাকার সাধারন মানুষের সুখ-দু:খ, হাসি-কান্না তার লেখায় সুন্দর ভাবে ফুটে উঠেছে।তাই বাংলার মানুষ তাকে পল্লী কবি অভিধায় অভিসিক্ত করেছে।তিনি অনেক পুরষ্কারে ভূষিত হয়েছেন। তার মধ্যে প্রেসিডেন্টস এওয়ার্ড ফর প্রাইড অফ পারফরমেন্স, একুশে পদক, স্বাধীনতা দিবস পুরস্কার (মরণোত্তর) অন্যতম। ১৯৬৯ সনে রবীন্দ্র ভারতী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কবিকে সম্মান সূচক ডি লিট উপাধিতে ভূষিত করে।১৯৭৪ সনে তিনি বাংলা একাডেমী পুরস্কারে মনোনীত হন কিন্তু তিনি তা প্রত্যাখ্যান করেন।পল্লী কবি জসীমউদ্দীন ১৯৭৬ সনে ঢাকায় মৃত্যুবরণ করেন। পরে তার নিজ গ্রাম বিমলগুহে তাকে সমাহিত করা হয়।
